 October 2018

Pastoral letter:

Dear Friends,

It started out with a sandwich. Perhaps you’ve heard the story of Karen Olson, the founder of family Promise. On her way to work, Olson saw a woman out on the street. There Olson met Millie, a woman who was homeless, who, more than a sandwich, wanted to be heard. There, Olson began to learn about the complexity of poverty. After some time of delivering sandwiches to those who were in need, Olson decided to do more, and in 1986, the first network was started.

Over 30 years later, the problem of poverty and homelessness has not ended. More and more people are working full time jobs and still do not have enough money to afford rent, much less medication, insurance, and save for the future. Sunnie Lain, the director of St. Vincent DePaul food pantry in Dayton, Ohio, said that the majority of her clients work. “People who are coming are people who will probably never recover from the great recession (in 2008). We have families watering down soup and moms trying to make a box of macaroni and cheese last for two days. We visit homes with no food in the cupboard at all. There is nothing.” This problem is not only in Dayton, Ohio, but right here in our area.

The problem of poverty can feel overwhelming. After all, Jesus said that the poor will always be with us. We have the opportunity to make a difference. Family Promise of Wayne County will begin hosting families who are homeless, and we have the opportunity to help. Macedon Center UMC has agreed to be a support congregation, and South Perinton is encouraged to be a part of it as well! Opportunities for service abound: washing sheets, preparing food, buying food for lunches, helping students with their homework, playing games, enjoying a meal with the guests, donating needed supplies. There are a lot of jobs, yes, and each of us is invited to do our part. Next month will be the first time that our partner congregation, Walworth UMC, will host families, and you will hear more about this as their week becomes close.

Jesus told a parable about the end of time, and how we will be judged according to how we show mercy: The righteous will say, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and

gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’  And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.’ We have yet another opportunity to serve Christ in our midst. In what ways might you respond to Christ’s leading?

Blessings,

Pastor Kim

From the Welcoming Taskforce – The Special Session of the General Church Conference is fast approaching in February 2019.  The 32 member Commission On The Way Forward was authorized by General Conference 2016 and appointed by the Council of Bishops to examine paragraphs in The Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and exploring options to strengthen the unity of the church. Please take a little time to familiarize with the report as the results of the vote at the General Conference could have far-reaching effects on the UMC. You can find the report on the church’s website www.umc.org (under the “Who We Are” tab there is a section for the General Conference 2019)

The Welcoming Taskforce in preparation for this vote, created a survey to get the temperature of our congregation and our feelings on becoming a Reconciling Congregation. And the results are in – and with 84% of the respondents saying we should become a Reconciling Congregation we would like to take some time over the next few months to have informational meetings and discussions on the topic. We want to continue the discussion and answer questions on the topic. So please save the following dates for a series of videos to spark that discussion. All events will of course include food – complete details to follow prior to each event.
