August 2018

Pastoral letter:

Dear Friends,

I hope that you are well and you are enjoying this beautiful, hot summer! It is difficult for me to believe just how busy this summer has been and how fast the days are moving! Perhaps, you have felt the same way. Recently, a friend of mine posted on Facebook about her first pumpkin spice coffee. She called it “…a little taste of Heavenly Fall in the middle of Summer.” What a joy it is to be able to get a taste of the seasons throughout the year. It reminded me, however, that often we live our lives in this way. We live in anticipation for the next good thing in front of us, sometimes missing the joy of that very moment.

Life is a gift. Each moment is a gift from God, moments to be cherished. Each and every moment or day is certainly not always easy or fun, certainly, but each and every moment is a gift from God. When we remind ourselves of this, we might begin to see each moment as holy. Psalm 114 reminds us, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” God has given us this day. Because it is a gift from God, this day is holy, steeped in the presence of God. Each interaction that we have with others, is an offer to discover the Holy within, around, and among us.

The lyrics of Holy Ground, by Geron Davis, remind me of the holiness of this moment.

We are standing on holy ground,

And I know that there are angels all around.

Let us praise Jesus now.

We are standing in His presence on holy ground!

Jesus, in Matthew 6, said to his disciples and to us, that reminder to not worry about tomorrow: “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteous-

ness, and all these things will be given to you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

We do not know what tomorrow will bring. God has given us this day. In what ways might we find the Holy all around us and find God’s joy within us today?

May the joy of the Lord be your strength!

Pastor Kim
