 October 2017

Pastoral letter:

Do you remember any of your halloween costumes? What fun it can be to watch children, all dressed up, moving from place to place, basking in the joy and excitement of the evening. They put on their costumes and imagine themselves as someone (or something!) else.

Dressing up and pretending to be something else is not simply for children We all, from time to time, wear masks. The masks that we put on are those that we use to try to hide our true selves from the world. We act like we have our life put together. For those of you on Facebook, you know that Facebook is not an accurate reflection of the highs and lows that makeup the normalcy of life. We want to project our best selves to the outside world. We wear plenty of masks.

All too often, we do not get to the heart of what is going on in our lives. It shows when people from foreign countries come visit the United States, not because of any language barrier, but because when they are given the common greeting, “Hi! How are you!” the travelers might answer truthfully, instead of responding, “good, thanks, how are you?”

One of the gifts of the church is that we do not have to wear all of our masks within the community of faith. As many have said, the church is not a museum for saints, but a hospital for the broken. The church is not simply a building for sick people to come and leave when they are well. We come find healing for our spirits or for the broken places in the world. We gather to practice being the church and building the Kingdom of God. We gather to hear the Good News once again so that we can live that Good News to everyone around us. We are invited to be a place of trust, knowing that those who we see each week want to know our true selves. The church is the body of Christ, so we, the people, are the church, the people who bring about Christ’s healing in the world. We do this when we are authentic people, risking taking off the masks that we use to hid ourselves from those around us.

And of course, we all enjoy the treats that come with the occasion of being the church. Yes, we have delicious food treats, but the treats of hospitality, care, love, and friend-

ship are much more delightful and long lasting.

But most importantly, if we do not feel that we can be honest with anyone else, we can be honest with God. Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not worry about anything, but in every-

thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” God knows who we are, so we do not have to hide ourselves from God. We have the opportunity to be honest with God and share our truest selves with our Creator.

I hope that you enjoy seeing the costumes of those among us. May we free ourselves from the masks that we wear and receive the gifts of God offered among us.

Pastor Kim
