September 2018

Pastoral letter:

Dear Friends,

I sometimes come across songs from various books that the Holy Spirit uses to teach me. One such song that I recently read is a simple song to the tune of “Frere Jacque?” The lyrics of “God is Speaking.” Written by Ken Bible, are as follows.

God is speaking. God is speaking. Do you hear? Do you hear?

Trust and you will hear him. Trust and you will hear him.

God is love. God is love.

God is speaking, always speaking using needs, using joys,

speaking in his wisdom, speaking in his mercy,

calling hearts, changing lives.

God is speaking. God is speaking. Do you hear? Do you hear?

Trust and you will hear him if you want to hear him.

God is love, always love.

God speaks to each of us. God is in the business of making God’s self known in many ways, not only through the Bible. We wish that God would come and clearly speak to us! However, it would be quite strange if someone walked up to us and said. “thus saith the Lord!” God doesn’t always speak to us like that, these days. The second stanza of this song reminded me of our time of sharing our celebrations and concerns. During those times, we are hearing people speaking, but what if we reimagined that time as God speaking to us? In what ways might God be speaking through those people who are sharing their celebrations, their concerns, and inviting us to reach out in care and love? It might not simply be those in the pews around us who are speaking audibly, but God whispering a call in our hearts.

God does not speak only to a few chosen people, leaving the rest of us to wonder. God speaks to all of us. This is a part of the gift and promise of our baptism. This is a part of the responsibility of our baptism. God has created us with ears that are ready to hear what God will say to us. As Jesus reminds us, “let anyone with ears to hear, listen!” (Mark 4:23) God speaks to each and every one of us and empowers us to be able to listen. God has equipped each of us with all that we need in order to hear God’s voice in our hearts and then respond with our lives.

(Cont’d)

Wouldn’t it be nice if we all learned at least the first verse of this song and lived it. God is speaking to us. Trust God, for you will hear God. God is love. It might just help us to open our ears so that we might hear those whispers of the Spirit that are all around us.

Let us, with ears to hear, listen!

Blessings,

Pastor Kim

From the Welcoming Taskforce – The Special Session of the General Church Conference is fast approaching in February 2019. The 32 member Commission On The Way Forward was authorized by General Conference 2016 and appointed by the Council of Bishops to examine paragraphs in The Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and exploring options to strengthen the unity of the church. Please take a little time to familiarize with the report as the results of the vote at the General Conference could have far-reaching effects on the UMC. You can find the report on the church’s website www.umc.org (under the “Who We Are” tab there is a section for the General Conference 2019)

The Welcoming Taskforce in preparation for this vote, created a survey to get the temperature of our congregation and our feelings on becoming a Reconciling Congregation. And the results are in – and with 84% of the respondents saying we should become a Reconciling Congregation we would like to take some time over the next few months to have informational meetings and discussions on the topic. We want to continue the discussion and answer questions on the topic. So please save the following dates for a series of videos to spark that discussion. All events will of course include food – complete details to follow prior to each event.
