 February 2018

Pastoral letter:

As of this writing, it feels as if spring might soon arrive: the sun has been shining, the snow melting, even the birds have begun their song. It has felt to me much more like late March rather than late January. And yet, I know, we still more than likely have plenty of winter to experience. As much as I would like to quickly enter the spring and summer seasons, these months have opportunities for growth for our environment. We need February (and March) to experience the beauty of April.

We are an Easter people. It would be all too easy for us to skip over the difficulties in Jesus’ life and focus instead on the beauty and joy of Easter. Instead, we are invited to journey through the time of Lent, the season of waiting and reflection as we watch with Jesus all that he experienced.

To that end, we will take time, beginning February 21 and ending March 28, each Wednesday evening at 7:00PM at Macedon Center and beginning February 18 and ending March 25, each Sunday after church at South Perinton to study the Scriptures together. We will be utilizing a video based Bible study call “The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus,” by Adam Hamilton. Each week, Hamilton will take us to the Holy Land, where we can imagine ourselves walking where Jesus walked. Hamilton’s hope is that we will explore the life, meaning, and ministry of Jesus Christ. I hope that you can attend each of the 6 sessions, but these are stand alone sessions, so if you are not able to attend all six, we hope that you will participate in as many as you are able. You are invited to bring a Bible and an open heart as we learn together. You will also soon see a sign up sheet to bring a snack to share at Macedon Center beginning at 6:45PM. Please, refrain from using nuts in your snacks.

We will discuss together baptism while viewing the Jordan River and reflect on Jesus’ healing ministry at Capernaum. We will imagine being a hearer of Jesus’ proclamation of the Kingdom of God in the mountains and remember how Jesus calmed the storms and view the Sea of Galilee; we will discuss Jesus’ ministry with sinners, outcasts, and the poor in Samaria. Finally, we will remember Jesus’ final week as we enter Jerusalem. This is a time to slow down, reflect with Jesus, and grow in our faith.

If you would like the book that goes along with the video each week, you may purchase it online. It is called “The Way: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus.” If you cannot find it, please let Nancy in the church office or me know, and we will purchase it for you. The cost is about $10.00. If cost is prohibitive, please let Kim know. She would be glad to order the book for you. There is also a devotional called The Way: 40 Days of Reflection: Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus if you would like to delve deeper into this study.

I pray that this season of Lent might be a meaningful time for you are you grow in God’s grace and love!

Pastor Kim

February 22, 1837: Founder’s Day, Founding of the Fourth Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

We are indebted to the founders of the South Perinton United Methodist Church for their time, expertise, team work, financial support, spiritual reinforcement.

Names include: Woolsey, Wilkinson, Wells, Rose, Wing, Mosher, Crosby, Comstock, Snedeker, Potter.

Members received on Feb. 22, 1937: Susan and Nancy Wilkinson, John & James Wilkinson, Mary Smith Wilkinson, wife of Joseph, Lorenzo and Martha Woolsey, his wife.

How we admire their vision, perseverance, earnestness, sincerity and unsolicited benevolence!

Not only did they build the foundation of our beautiful house of worship next to a dirt road frequented by horses and buggies, but, by the same token, they built a widespread everlasting spirit of fellowship inside and outside the walls for all to enjoy.

We are blessed with a “Goodly Heritage”. Rev. Raymond Risden’s sermon topic,

1937, at 100 year anniversary of dedication Oct. 19, 1937.

Lest we forget on Feb. 22, 2018 and ever more.
